Vietnam Essays (547 words) - First Indochina War, Indochina Wars

Vietnam The Vietnam War was a brutal war that affected millions of people in many different countries. All wars start because there is a difference in people's opinions, and the Vietnam War was no different. It started because France and a Vietnam leader, Ho Chi Minh, had a difference in opinion about the type of government Vietnam should have. To find out why the war broke out you will have to go back to the 1750's. This is where the French started their so-called protectorate state of Vietnam. For many years the people of Vietnam protested but could not organize into a force powerful enough to resist the French. Then in 1946 a communist educated individual called Ho Chi Minh organized the people of North Vietnam and drove out the French rulers in a war that took eight years. During peace settlements in Geneva they allowed North and South Vietnam to become separate nations, divided on the 17th parallel. This was only to last for two years. After two years the two countries would then vote on a common leader and reunite the two countries once more. This never happened. South Vietnam was afraid that a Communist leader would be chosen and the nation would be in ruins. Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam opposing the canceled election began attacks on Southern Vietnam and remaining French officials to gain control of South Vietnam. If North Vietnam was to begin their invasion of South Vietnam the Communist ruler Ho Chi Minh was sure to have complete control over the nation and spread his ideas of communism to neighboring countries. The United States thought that this should not happen so in 1965 the president ordered the bombing of North Vietnam and the landing of US troops in South Vietnam. This then caused North Vietnam to send regular units to the South. That therefore, cause more US troops to become involved. All of this kept building and building until it was a full-scale war. The main cause that lead the Vietnam War to brake out was that the old imperial France thought they could keep a so called protectorate state without giving them any freedom. Then a communist leader came along that united the people and took over in the name of freedom. The U.S. thought that if Vietnam became communist then neighboring countries would soon follow. They did not want communism to spread so they tried to stop it but it did not work out like they thought it would. The United States hatred for communism was what pulled them into the war. Another mishappening that pulled the United States deeper in to the war happened in the first week of August 1964, when North Vietnamese torpedo boats were reported to have attacked two U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin. As a result of this attack, former President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered jets to South Vietnam and the retaliatory bombing of military targets in North Vietnam. Later on, this information was found out to be false. The Vietnam War was a very unique war. There has been many different thing said about the Vietnam War. Some say the war was a waste of time because it as not our battle. There are many reasons that caused us to enter into the war. This war was very unique because the U.S. didn't win but did win most of the battles. The U.S. was greatly affected by the war and so was Vietnam.

Galileo was sent off to analyze in a Jesuit monastery. After four old ages. Galileo had announced to his male parent that he wanted to be a monastic. This was non precisely what male parent had in head. so Galileo was hurriedly withdrawn from the monastery. In 1581. at the age of 17. he entered the University of Pisa to analyze medical specialty. as his male parent wished but neer completed it because of his acute involvement in mathematics and doctrine. At age 20. Galileo noticed a lamp singing overhead while he was in a cathedral. Curious to happen out how long it took the lamp to swing back and Forth. he used his pulsation to clip big and little swings. Galileo discovered something that no 1 else had of all time realized. which was the period of each swing was precisely the same. The jurisprudence of the pendulum. which would finally be used to modulate redstem storksbills. made Galileo Galilei immediately celebrated. In 1592. he was appointed to the place of a mathematician at the University of Padua and it was during his clip. he began his work on the telescope. While in Padua. he met Marina Gamba and in 1600 their girl Virginia was born. In 1601 they had another girl Livia and in 1606 a boy Vincenzo. Galileo’s research was specialized in the gesture of inclined planes. gesture of the pendulum and the gesture of freely falling organic structures. He is known for his discovery finds and besides his controversial beliefs which allowed for a more modern and practical scientific discipline. Galileo was the first individual to direct a refractile telescope out into the dark sky and he decided to analyze the Moon. One of his largest finds was that there were four Moons revolving Jupiter. Another one of Galileo’s observations through his telescope was that the planet Venus went through stage alterations similar to our Moon. Galileo had noticed that the discernible size of Venus as seen through his telescope is related to the place of the planet relation to the Sun. This observation had pushed Galileo to believe that the Earth and other planets had to go around around the Sun or it would non be executable for Venus to hold a stage alteration. This is known as the Copernican System. For Galileo Galilei. stating that the Earth went around the Sun changed everything since he was beliing the instructions of the Church. While some of the Church’s mathematicians wrote that his observations were clearly right. many members of the Church believed that he must be incorrect and accused him of perpetrating â€Å"heresy† . which was a really serious affair. However. Galileo was found inexperienced person of all charges but was cautioned non to learn the Copernican System. In 1634. while Galileo was under house apprehension. his girl. Virginia died. At this clip he began work on his concluding book. Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations refering Two New Sciences. This book was smuggled out of Italy and published in Holland. Galileo died early in 1642. Due to his strong belief. he was buried obscurely in 1737.

Cincinnatus rose to the occasion, defeated the Aequi, made them pass under the yoke to show their subjugation, gave up the title of dictator sixteen days after it had been granted, and promptly returned to his farm. Expansion of Rome in Italy Horatius: (late 6th C. B.C.) Horatius was a legendary heroic leader of the Roman forces against the Etruscans. He deliberately stood alone against the Etruscans on a bridge while the Romans were destroying the bridge from their side to keep the Etruscans from using it to get across the Tiber. Marius Scipio Africanus: Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Major (235-183 B.C.) Scipio Africanus is the Roman commander who defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in the Second Punic War using tactics hed learned from the Carthaginian military leader. Sulla: Lucius Cornelius Sulla (138-78 B.C.) Sulla was a Roman general who vied successfully with Marius for leadership of the command against Mithridates VI of Pontus. In the following civil war Sulla defeated the followers of Marius, had the soldiers of Marius killed, and had himself declared dictator for life in 82 B.C. He had proscription lists drawn up. After he had made the changes he thought necessary to the government of Rome to bring it back in line with the old values Sulla stepped down in 79 B.C. and died a year later.

Family Business & Entrepreneurship - Assignment Example 2.1. Tata Group: In brief, Kuratko describes the Tata Group as â€Å"a well-known and one of the oldest family businesses in India, with its presence in more than 100 countries. Tata Group was founded in 1868 as a family business in textile industry and has expanded into various other sectors such as textiles, communications, software, engineering, materials, services, energy and consumer products†(2013, p.559). Some of Tata companies include Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Teleservices, Titan, the Taj group of hotels etc. The total revenues of Tata Group are around $ 80 billion, most of which come from Tata companies outside India. While much can be said about the Tata group, the most noticeable point of argument is its future performance in the native and international markets after the appointment of new Chairman, Cyrus Mistry, who is part of Tata family through marriage and as largest shareholding member. 2.1 Point of study: Within the Tata Group, Tata Motors has been the point of attention both for the company and the media in recent times, especially after their acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) from Ford Motors, under the chairmanship of Mr Ratan Tata, following Ford’s failure to generate profits in the European markets. Reports indicate that Tata Motors, which was running in losses during this acquisition, closed the last quarter of 2013 in impressive profits in their European subsidiaries under the chairmanship of Cyrus Mistry (Sahu, 2014). While this is good news for the Tatas in European markets, their Indian business continued to report losses and weak demand with a 36% fall in volume and 27% fall in revenues. To understand how family members’ commitment to the business translates into growth and profits, it is important to understand the nature of entrepreneurship exercised at the Tatas. This will also probably highlight underlying

Live or Die Essay -- essays research papers

In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the ghost of Hamlet’s father appears very briefly. However, he provides the basis for the development and eventual downfall of Hamlet’s character. The play begins with a dismal Hamlet mourning his father’s death Recognizing this gloom, Queen Gertrude urges Hamlet to â€Å"cast thy nighted color off, and let thine eye look like a friend on Denmark† (I, ii, 68-69). Soon after, the ghost appears, insisting, â€Å"If thou didst ever thy father love, revenge his foul and most unnatural murder† (I, v, 24-25). As Hamlet decides to scourge the past and present evils in Denmark, the ghost unleashes death and malice onto the stage. The first and most obvious change which the ghost instills into Hamlet is a vengeful spirit. Not only must Hamlet destroy Claudius, but he must also stop Fortinbras from invading Denmark. Although less obvious, the second task can be inferred from the fact that the ghost appears wearing â€Å"the very armor he had on when he the ambitious Norway combated† (I, i, 60-61). Hamlet spends the entire play trying to carry out these orders, eventually causing the downfall of his spirit. Partly because he feels reserve and guilt for his task, Hamlet delays taking action throughout the play. However, this paradoxical delay only makes Hamlet feel more guilty. He questions his self-worth and even considers suicide, pondering, â€Å"To die -- to sleep -- no more; and by a sleep to say we end the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is he...

In Search of the Spiritual Essay

Affirmative action was a policy set into place to even the playing field for all races, religion, gender or national origin. In his article â€Å"Whites Swim in Racial Preference† Tim Wise gives an in depth view of racial preference of Whites versus any other race. Even though affirmative action has been set into place, Whites still have the advantage to excel since they are given more opportunities and advantages simply because of their race. One of the examples that is used by Tim Wise is the point systems that is used by the University of Michigan has set up an even though 20 additional points for minority groups even after it is all totaled Whites tend to have more points than most minority groups. Just as it was stated in the article Whites have been raised believing that everything they have achieved has been on their own, they have accomplished their goals in a system and world that has been set up for them to achieve in. Everyone would like to believe that social equal ity has been achieved when the reality of it, is that this should be something that we should still be maintaining to achieve. Often when you hear of glass ceiling it if referred to women not being able to achieve the same status in the workforce as men, but this also includes minorities too. It’s a known fact that even though we now have an African American president there are still more White politics in office than African Americans. Discrimination is also another reason as to why Whites still have the advantage, although most people aren’t racists, there are still quite a few people that still judge people by their gender or race. Even though discrimination is illegal it is still prevalent. You would want to think in 2013 that this wasn’t a possibility but it is something that this generation needs to combat if we are to move forward. White privilege refers to the rights or immunities granted to people as a particular benefit or favor simply because they are White. W.E.B. DuBois observed labor workers, instead of wanting fair work conditions for all laborers, White workers accepted t he public and psychological wage of Whiteness. I would like to believe that no all of the White workers believed in that, but it could be possible that they were scared to lose their job if they spoke up. White privileges are  something that White people may take for granted because they might not even notice that it exists. White privileges are can help them achieve goal and obtain more than most minority groups since this isn’t something that minority groups have. Racial profiling is also something that would give Whites an advantage of minority groups. Racial profiling is supposed to be illegal but there are many cases that show that it is still happening in the United States. We have seen a lot of racial profiling since the events of 9/11 but African Americans have been racially profiled way before that event happened. I personally have been a victim of racial profiling and was pulled over for no apparent reason other than the fact that I was African American. Although I agree that the nation’s security is very important I don’t agree on signaling certain people out just because of their race. This is something that Whites would rarely if ever have to deal w ith. As I stated before, although the world has advanced greatly since the times of slavery, it still hasn’t changed enough where minority groups can achieve and maintain the status of Whites. I would hope that as the world continues to progress that this is something that can change so that other minority groups can achieve their goals and we can establish some type of social equality and everyone can be viewed as equal instead of being judged by their race or gender. I would hope that in the future this is something that my multiracial children wouldn’t have to worry about or deal with. We constantly tell our children that through hard work and dedication they can achieve whatever they put their minds too and I hope that somebody that statement will be true. Comparison Essay Essays

Comparison Essay Essays Comparison Essay Essay Comparison Essay Essay In The Kite Runner, Baby and Emir have a relationship that not all people would describe as the typical faith ere/son relationship. Baby strives to push Emir to be the best person he can be and wants whats b est. for Emir. Emir does not understand that this is what Baby is trying to do. Emir feels as if he will never be able to live up to Abss expectations and will always be compared to the way ABA a were when he was a young boy. When Emir is describing the way that Baby sees the world ( black and white), he says that you cant love a person who lives that way without fear g him too. Maybe even hating him a little (Hussein 16). Emir is suggesting that his feelings tow arts his father are more of a fearful reverence than pure admiration; from Emirs point of view, its a Lovelace relationship. Baby also expresses his doubts about Emir. Baby is, simply put, powerful, well liked, and admired for his passionate personality by neighboring friends. ABA a is dominant and Strong willed. Maim mentioned [worshipping] most days (Hussein 34). He expects his son to Freed 2 be the same as he is, and clearly he is not. Emir feels like he is not good Enola h to live up to his fathers expectations and often [felt] guilty about it (Hussein 29). Emir tries his best to impress his father. During the the kite running contest, Emir is very determine De to pull out a victory so Baby will be proud of him. At times, Baby wishes Emir were more eke his childhood friend, Hosannas. Hosannas is a very quiet and polite young boy who has a specie connection with Baby. Emir gets jealous by the fact that Baby shows more affection to Hausa n and wishes that it could be him receiving the attention. Hussein demonstrates the harsh reality f fathers relationships in the common world (Hussein 28). Men often lack showing e affection their sons and demand them to fulfill their hopes. During most fathers relationships, there are certain times where the father wants to become more of a player in his sons life than his son believes is necessary. The reasons for this are numerous and can be demonstrated in different ways. Miller is able o give an example of this behavior through the actions of Wily Loan. When Biff comes home t 0 recollect himself, Wily perceives Biffs life as a failure. Since Wily desperately wants hi: oldest son, Biff, to succeed in every way possible, he tries to take matters into his own Hzs ends. Ill get him a job selling. He could be big in no time (Miller 16). The reason that Biff came mom is to find out what he wants in life. Because Wily gets in the way, matters become moor e complicated. Partly due to Wills persistence in Biffs life, they have conflicting ideas as to hat the American dream is. Wily believes that working on the road by selling is the grog tastes job a man COUld have (Miller 81). Biff, however, feels the most inspiring job a man could have is working outdoors (Miller 22). Freed 3 When the dreams of Wily and Biff collide, it becomes frustrating to Wily became use he believes that the way hes pushing Biff is the right thing to do. Wily is disappoint need that Biff doesnt even know what [hes] supposed to want (Miller 22) in his future. Will lay finds himself to be wise and wants Biff to take after him. Wily wants to be the one to shoo w him how to do (Miller 28) great things in his life. If a father becomes too involved in his sons fife, Miller believes that the only result will be friction between the two. Wily doesnt eve n wants Biffs input and continues to tell himself that he is right (Miller 52)! As unfortunate as it is, there are many instances where a father favors one son over another, leading to social conflicts within the legislators son, which would be Biff in this case. In most cases it is the oldest son that is being favored while the younger son is ignored. Usually the father doesnt even real size what is happening and is oblivious to the poor action he is committing. He simply get s too caught up in the successes of his eldest son and he may even try to live out his life through his sons experiences. Because Wily has dreams of magnificence for Biff, Miller shows how Wills eldest son, Happy is overlooked. To men, it is crucial that their sons do every wing they can to live up their unrealistic expectations. Hussein and Miller both prove that a relationship between a father and son o often results in the father overpowering the son and pushing them to meet the unspoken expectations they have set. Biography of Chandragupta Maurya, Indian Emperor

Biography of Chandragupta Maurya, Indian Emperor Chandragupta Maurya (c. 340–c. 297 BCE) was an Indian emperor who founded the Maurya Empire, which rapidly expanded across much of India into modern-day Pakistan. Maurya did battle with Alexander the Great, who invaded the Indian kingdom in 326 BCE, and prevented the Macedonian king from conquering the far side of the Ganges. Maurya went on to unite almost all of what is now India and defeat Alexanders successors. Fast Facts: Chandragupta Maurya Known For: Maurya united ancient India under the Maurya Empire in 322 BCE.Born: c. 340 BCEDied: 297 BCE in Shravanabelagola, Maurya EmpireSpouse: DurdharaChildren: Bindusara Early Life Chandragupta Maurya was reportedly born in Patna (in the modern-day Bihar state of India) sometime around 340 BCE. Scholars are uncertain of some details about his life. For example, some texts claim that both of Chandragupta’s parents were of the Kshatriya (warrior or prince) caste, while others state that his father was a king and his mother a maid from the lowly Shudra (servant) caste. It seems likely that Maurys father was Prince Sarvarthasiddhi of the Nanda Kingdom.  Chandragupta’s grandson, Ashoka the Great, later claimed a blood relationship to Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, but this claim is unsubstantiated. We know almost nothing about Chandragupta Maurya’s childhood and youth before he took on the Nanda Empire, which supports the hypothesis that he was of humble origin- no records about him exist until he founded the Maurya Empire. Maurya Empire Chandragupta was brave and charismatic- a born leader. The young man came to the attention of a famous Brahmin scholar, Chanakya, who bore a grudge against the Nanda. Chanakya began to groom Chandragupta to conquer and rule in the place of the Nanda emperor by teaching him tactics through different Hindu sutras and helping him raise an army. Chandragupta allied himself to the king of a mountain kingdom- perhaps the same Puru who had been defeated but spared by Alexander- and set out to conquer the Nanda. Initially, the upstart’s army was rebuffed, but after a long series of battles Chandragupta’s forces laid siege to the Nanda capital at Pataliputra. In 321 BCE the capital fell, and 20-year-old Chandragupta Maurya started his own kingdom. It was named the Maurya Empire. Chandragupta’s new empire stretched from what is now Afghanistan  in the west to Myanmar (Burma) in the east, and from Jammu and Kashmir in the north to the Deccan Plateau in the south. Chanakya served as the equivalent of a prime minister in the fledgling government. When Alexander the Great died in 323 BCE, his generals divided up his empire into satrapies  so that each of them would have a territory to rule, but by about 316, Chandragupta Maurya was able to defeat and incorporate all of the satrapies in the mountains of Central Asia, extending his empire to the edge of what is now Iran, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Some sources allege that Chandragupta Maurya may have arranged for the assassination of two of the Macedonian satraps: Philip, son of Machatas, and Nicanor of Parthia. If so, it was a very precocious act even for Chandragupta- Philip was assassinated in 326  when the future ruler of the Maurya Empire was still an anonymous teenager. Conflicts With Southern India and Persia In 305 BCE, Chandragupta decided to expand his empire into eastern Persia. At the time, Persia was ruled by Seleucus I Nicator, founder of the Seleucid Empire, and a former general under Alexander. Chandragupta seized a large area in eastern Persia. As part of the peace treaty that ended this war, Chandragupta gained control of that land as well as the hand of one of Seleucus’s daughters in marriage. In exchange, Seleucus received 500 war elephants, which he put to good use at the Battle of Ipsus in 301. With as much territory as he could comfortably rule to the north and west, Chandragupta Maurya next turned his attention to the south. With an army of 400,000 (according to Strabo) or 600,000 (according to Pliny the Elder), Chandragupta conquered all of the Indian subcontinent except for Kalinga (now Odisha) on the east coast and the Tamil kingdom at the southern tip of the landmass. By the end of his reign, Chandragupta Maurya had unified almost all of the Indian subcontinent. His grandson Ashoka would go on to add Kalinga and the Tamils to the empire. Family Life The only one of Chandragupta’s queens or consorts for whom we have a name is Durdhara, the mother of his first son Bindusara. However, it is believed that Chandragupta had many more consorts. According to legend, Prime Minister Chanakya was concerned that Chandragupta might be poisoned by his enemies, and therefore  started introducing small amounts of poison into the emperor’s food in order to build up a tolerance. Chandragupta was unaware of this plan and shared some of his food with his wife Durdhara when she was pregnant with their first son. Durdhara died, but Chanakya rushed in and performed an emergency operation to remove the full-term baby. The infant Bindusara survived, but a bit of his mother’s poisoned blood touched his forehead, leaving a blue bindu- the spot that inspired his name. Little is known about Chandragupta’s other wives and children. Chandraguptas son Bindusara is likely remembered more because of his son than for his own reign. He was the father of one of India’s greatest monarchs, Ashoka the Great. Death When he was in his 50s, Chandragupta became fascinated with Jainism, an extremely ascetic belief system. His guru was the Jain saint Bhadrabahu. In 298 BCE, the emperor renounced his rule, handing over power to his son Bindusara. He then  traveled south to a cave at Shravanabelogola, now in Karnataka. There, Chandragupta meditated without eating or drinking for five weeks until he died of starvation in a practice known as sallekhana or santhara. Legacy The dynasty that Chandragupta founded would rule over India and the southern part of Central Asia until 185 BCE. Chandraguptas grandson Ashoka would follow in his footsteps in several ways- conquering territory as a young man and then becoming devoutly religious as he aged. In fact, Ashokas reign in India may be the purest expression of Buddhism in any government in history. Today, Chandragupta is remembered as the unifier of India, like Qin Shihuangdi in China, but far less bloodthirsty. Despite a paucity of records, Chandragupta’s life story has inspired novels, movies such as 1958s â€Å"Samrat Chandragupt,† and even a 2011 Hindi-language TV series. Sources Goyal, S. Critique globalization (the super story) - Essay Example Due to the emergence of digital applications and the internet in globalization, I also expected that he would touch on the topic of the application of the internet in moving globalization towards the right direction and route. It was therefore not surprising to find that he touched on the areas of supermarkets and the creation of the global financial centers. In explaining the manner in which nations are interconnected especially after the cold war, Friedman captured the role of the United States as the superpower that has remained. He however failed to provide a description of the post-cold war era especially the knowledge on how it affected the economic powers of the people and how it influenced growth. In Friedman, the process through markets integrates and develops uniform transportation and communication systems for doing business across the world is globalization, a process that has never been seen in history. Through this process, corporations spread across the world have been enabled to move the products from one point to the other with haste, efficiency and precision than was witnessed before. Through this definition, the author has clearly captured the business systems that exist today especially capturing the post and pre-cold war eras that witnessed world integration and formation of economic powerhouses. Though looking simple, the definition has captured the fact that markets across the world have been interconnected and brought together through web connectivity, a process that can allow companies as separate and far apart as North America to do business with Asia (Friedman 474). Before the eyes of Friedman, globalization is a force multiplier that gives nations, global markets and individuals at different levels of incorporation are empowered to communicate and us the available resources. According to Friedman, globalization is tool that leads to the distribution
